Chimpanzees are the reason most people come: two habituated communities are followed from before dawn with guides through the wet undergrowth, the trackers listening for the calls before anyone glimpses the animals in the branches, and a morning of steep, muddy walking usually ends with them. Easier to find are the Rwenzori colobus, black-and-white monkeys with long white capes that gather here in troops of three or four hundred, the largest of any tree-dwelling monkey in Africa, crashing through the canopy together. The Igishigishigi trail, named for the giant tree ferns that crowd it, climbs gently through drifting mist and unseen birdsong to East Africa's first canopy walkway, a suspension bridge 160 metres long and 60 metres above the forest floor.\n\nNyungwe is a birding forest as well, with some 300 species and two dozen found only in the Albertine Rift, and the best of it is on the main road that cuts through the forest, where cars pull over at first light while the air is cool and the mist hangs in the trees. A spring high in the forest is counted among the most distant sources of the Nile, the point farthest upstream from the sea; the rain that falls a few metres to the west runs to the Congo and the Atlantic. Where the forest gives way to farmland, tea bushes climb the hillsides in neat emerald rows around Gisakura, and the lodges stand among them. In the long dry season of June to September the cloud thins and the trails firm up.
