The lake exists because a mountain fell down: a vast rockslide from the Doldenhorn thousands of years ago dammed the valley, and the water that gathered behind the rubble drains only slowly through the rock beneath, so the level rises and falls by several metres across the year and the shoreline moves in and out. The colour comes from the glaciers. From June to September the melt off the Blüemlisalp carries fine rock powder into the lake and turns it its deepest blue-green; before and after, with less meltwater, the water pales to grey. From the cable car's top station a twenty-minute walk brings you to the shore, where the cliffs stand 2,000 metres above the water and waterfalls come off them in threads.\n\nThe shoreline loop rings the lake in about two hours, threading pine forest and open alp with the cliffs mirrored beside you, climbing to a ledge that looks down on the whole lake. Wooden rowboats go out from the jetty onto water so clear and cold that it hardly looks real, and the mountain inn on the shore keeps rooms for those who stay after the last gondola goes down, when the lake belongs to the people at the inn. From the top station a summer toboggan track drops 750 metres of curves down 150 metres of hillside with the mountains filling the view ahead, and in winter the lake freezes hard enough to walk on. The slopes above are still moving: since 2020 the crag of Spitze Stei, high above the eastern shore, has been sliding as the permafrost that holds it together melts, watched by sensors.
