The mountain has been erupting on and off since 1965, and its slopes are sheets of black, glassy lava, much of it from the flows of 2021, that you cross with a guide as the ground grows warmer and the smoking summit cone draws nearer; the trail starts through farmland and forest, steep enough that village families rent sure-footed horses by the hour to carry you up the opening stretch. Then the trees stop and the lava begins, ropy and crunching, with steam rising from cracks and the heat coming up through your boots, and at the hot spots the guide pulls out a bag of marshmallows and a stick.\n\nFrom the cone's high shoulder the guides point out Guatemala's giants one by one across the plain: Agua, Acatenango and Fuego, and Fuego usually steals the moment, puffing ash or, on a good evening, flinging glowing bombs from its summit a few ridgelines away. The active crater of Pacaya is named for Alfredo MacKenney, a Guatemalan doctor who climbed the volcano well over a thousand times and led the effort to keep watch on it. On a late or overnight tour the summit cone can hurl incandescent rock above its rim after dark and light the underside of its own steam, and the lava, when it is flowing, glows red down the flank. Pacaya has buried its own trails and villages more than once, and in 2010 it dropped ash on the capital and closed the airport.
