The towers are the remains of a single limestone platform, eaten away by rain and sea over millions of years until only the hardest pieces stood, and inside some of them the rock has collapsed to leave a lagoon open only to the sky. These are the hongs, Thai for rooms, and they are the reason to come. At low tide a sea canoe can slip through a cave mouth in the cliff, sometimes with you lying flat to clear the roof, and surface inside a ring of rock a hundred metres high with mangroves growing on the floor and birds calling overhead; at high tide the entrance is under water and the room is sealed. Between the towers run mangrove channels, a nursery for the fish, prawns and crabs that feed the whole bay.\n\nThe classic way in is a painted long-tail boat, sitting near the bow as the towers close in around you. The needle everyone photographs is Ko Ta Pu, the thin rock standing on its own in the water beside the island used in a James Bond film in 1974; boats have been kept off it since 1998 to stop it being worn away, so it is seen from a distance. Ko Panyi is a village built entirely on posts over the water, pressed against the base of a cliff, with plank lanes running between houses, shops and a gold-domed mosque, and its people still fish the bay. On the cliffs at Khao Khian, ochre paintings of people, boats, fish and elephants were left by people who knew this water at least 3,000 years ago.
