The canyon is the Siq, a kilometre of dim, winding gorge between walls up to 80 metres high, in places only a few metres apart, with the water channels the Nabataeans cut still running along the rock. Then the gorge splits and the Treasury fills the gap ahead: a facade forty metres high carved whole from the cliff, columns, statues and an urn on top. It was a tomb, not a treasury; the name comes from a Bedouin legend that the urn held a pharaoh's gold, and the bullet marks on it are from people who tried to break it open.\n\nPast the Treasury the valley widens into the Street of Facades, rows of tomb fronts cut side by side into the cliff, then the theatre carved into the hillside, and the Royal Tombs stepping up the rock face, and the scale keeps growing. Around eight hundred rock-cut steps climb through the hills to the Monastery, Ad-Deir, a facade even larger than the Treasury and far quieter, with the desert falling away to the west. A signposted staircase off the main valley climbs the Al-Khubtha cliffs to a ledge that looks straight down on the Treasury from above, where Bedouin tea stalls with bright rugs mark the best perches. Flash floods are Petra's oldest danger, and the Nabataeans diverted the seasonal torrent away from the Siq with a dam and a tunnel that Jordan rebuilt only after a flood killed tourists in 1963. Until the 1980s the Bdoul Bedouin lived inside the caves and tombs, herding goats among the monuments, and their descendants run the stalls today.
