Divers come for the current. At Cape Kri, off the island of Kri, the tide pushes through a channel where the reef fish gather in walls, and the record for the most species counted on a single dive was set here. Reef mantas commute along a corridor of about 130 kilometres and gather thickest at the cleaning stations of the Dampier Strait from December to March. On the shallows lives a shark that walks: the epaulette shark pushes itself across the reef on paddle-shaped fins to reach tide pools too shallow for anything else to hunt in. The islands themselves began as coral reefs on the seabed, lifted above the water by moving plates and then eaten away at the waterline, which is why so many of them stand on narrow stems like mushrooms.\n\nThe view that defines Raja Ampat is from the top of a bare limestone peak above Wayag, in the north: a maze of green-topped islets scattered across a star-shaped lagoon of pale blue water. In the south, around Misool, the limestone breaks into flooded mazes that can only be entered by small boat, cutting the engine to drift between walls that lean in overhead. The reefs are kept this rich partly by the people who own them. Papuan villages built on posts above the shallows still close stretches of their own sea to fishing and reopen them with a ceremony, a custom older than any law, and a village visit puts you in the smallest unit of conservation here. Before dawn on Waigeo or Gam, a walk into the forest ends at a display tree where the red bird-of-paradise fans its plumes and dances for a mate.
