Three kinds of snowtrout, cold-water fish of the Himalaya, live in Rara and in no other water on Earth. The forest around it is the national park, and in April and May the rhododendrons flush the slopes red, pink and white, with musk deer and red pandas in the trees and Himalayan black bears on the slopes above.\n\nThe view that people walk for is from Murma Top, a ridge at 3,630 metres reached by a climb of two to three hours from the shore, where the whole lake lies below like a blue eye in the pines with the snow ranges of the Karnali behind it; the thing to do is camp a night up there and catch it in changing light. The villages above the lake belong to the district of Mugu, one of the poorest and most remote in Nepal, and in the settlements a walk above the shore men still wear the traditional topi and life follows the herding and farming seasons of the high Karnali. The park has a history: around 250 families once farmed these shores, and in 1976 they were resettled in the lowlands far to the south so the lake could be protected, and the empty terraces are still on the hillsides.
