For over a century nobody could explain why two clear streams should make a blue one, and the answer came in 2013: one stream carries particles of aluminium silicate too small to reflect light, the other changes the water's acidity, and when they mix the particles clump to a size that scatters blue and nothing else, so the colour is made in front of you at Los Teñideros, the dyers, where the two waters tumble in from the forest and cloud into blue within a few metres. The Maleku people of this valley hold the river sacred, and the local story tells it more simply: when God finished painting the sky, he rinsed his brush here.\n\nThe trail is a loop of about six kilometres through dripping rainforest loud with frogs and birds and with howler monkeys overhead, and the first stop is the waterfall, reached by a long wooden staircase down into the gorge, where the river drops thirty metres into a pool of milky blue that nobody may swim in. Beyond it a mirador looks over the canopy, a hanging bridge crosses the river, and at Borbollones the water seems to come to a boil, volcanic gas rising through the riverbed in strings of bubbles with the sharp smell of sulphur in the air, the volcano above still working under the forest.
