The walk begins at Xyloskalo, the wooden staircase, a steep descent by stone steps through cypress and pine with the peak of Gingilos overhead, and the whole route runs downhill through a landscape that changes as it goes: alpine forest, then a dry riverbed of white boulders between rising walls, then the bare limestone narrows and finally the sea. Halfway down are the roofless stone houses of Samaria village under huge plane trees, whose last people were moved out when the gorge became a national park in 1962; the Skordilis family had settled here in the 1300s while fleeing the coast, and for centuries the gorge sheltered Cretans resisting Venetian and Ottoman rule, its only entrances easy to hold.\n\nThe Iron Gates, the Sideroportes, are the narrowest point near the end, where the walls close so tightly you can almost brush both at once and the sky is a sliver far overhead, and the stream runs through on a wooden walkway. On the high sun-warmed ledges above the path live the kri-kri, the Cretan goat found almost nowhere else, which is not a true wild animal but descends from among the first goats ever domesticated, brought to Crete and left to run free; they come down to the old village in the quiet hours. The walk takes five to seven hours on the stones, and it ends at Agia Roumeli, a beach village on the south coast that no road reaches, where walkers swim in the sea and wait for the ferry along the coast to Sougia or Chora Sfakion. The gorge is open from May to October and closed on days of rain, when the river returns.
