The rock is the ash of the island's volcanoes compacted under the sea and lifted, and the meltemi has stripped and polished it into rolling white curves that are warm, smooth and slightly springy underfoot, with caves worn into the cliffs below; one fine-grained band in the cliffs is twisted and folded, wet sediment that shuddered in an earthquake on the sea floor and set that way, holding the shake in stone. The inlet is a flooded ravine cut into the soft rock, narrow and deep, and the way in is straight off the smooth stone from ledges of a few metres, with the water clear to the bottom, calmest in June and again from September into October, when the wind drops and the sea is at its warmest.\n\nThe name comes from the Saracen pirates who used the inlet as a hideout, and a short walk east along the coast reaches the wreck of the Africa, a tanker driven onto these rocks in a December storm in 2003 and broken in two, rusting in the water below the white cliffs. There is no lighting anywhere on the plateau, so on moonless nights of high summer the galactic core rises over the white rock with the pale stone as a floor beneath it, and in the last light the hollows on the western lip of the ravine stay warm long after the sun has gone. The island around it is a volcano's worth of coloured rock, with beaches of red, yellow and white and the old sulphur mines.
