The mountains rise to 1,708 metres a few kilometres from the sea at Sokcho, and the climbs begin at Sinheungsa, an ancient temple of the Seon school on the lower slopes, under the gilt-bronze Great Unification Buddha, fifteen metres of seated figure facing the valley, before the granite trails start. The signature climb is Ulsanbawi, a wall of six granite peaks at 873 metres reached by roughly 800 steel steps pinned to the rock, a haul that ends on a bare summit with the spires around, the sea to the east and the valleys below; the rock carries a legend that it set out from the far south to join the twelve thousand peaks of Geumgangsan, in what is now North Korea, arrived too late and stayed here.\n\nThe cable car climbs in minutes toward Gwongeumseong, an old fortress site on the ridge with a short walk to a bare granite top and the same view without the stairs, and Cheonbuldong valley is walked in the shade along a stream where snowmelt-clear water slides between huge rounded boulders and gathers in green basins, up toward waterfalls and the high peaks.
