The cliff is not a mountain edge but an abandoned sea cliff, part of the line the ocean carved when the coast lay here, before the land rose and the sea moved five kilometres south; the Skóga river simply runs off the old shoreline, which is why the falls stand alone on a flat plain with nothing around them. At the foot you stand on the black pebbles a few paces from where the water lands, the spray drifts over you within moments, the ground shudders, and on any sunny afternoon a rainbow, often a double one, stands in the mist. The long steel staircase up the eastern side changes what the falls are: from the railed platform at the top you stand level with the lip, watching the river bunch and bend before it goes over the edge, with the plain and the sea beyond.\n\nThe top is also a beginning. Above the falls the trail follows the Skóga river inland past more than twenty further waterfalls, each different from the last, through a green gorge with no road and few people, climbing toward the Fimmvörðuháls pass between the glaciers of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, the last day of the Laugavegur trek walked in reverse. Local folklore says the Viking settler Þrasi buried a chest of gold behind the falls around the year 900, and that a boy once hooked its ring, which hung on the church door at Skógar until the museum took it. The falls stand beside the ring road, and the village of Skógar keeps a folk museum of turf houses.
