The dunes are the largest moving sand in central Europe, fed by the beach and driven by the westerly that rarely lets up on the crest, hauling a low hissing sheet of sand over the ridge and stinging it against the ankles, and the tallest, Łącka, is 42 metres, waded up with no path and nothing firm to push against, every step sliding back down the flank; at its advancing front the pines stand buried to their lower branches, the sand piled against them like a slow wave, and on the crest the view runs over white sand to the Baltic on one side and the lake of Łebsko on the other, an open bay of the sea until the dunes sealed it off, still barely deeper than a swimming pool. The way back drops down the seaward side to the empty beach and follows the shore to Łeba.\n\nThe flat woods crossed on the way to the dune were a secret weapons range, where the Germans tested rockets in the Second World War, and the launch pads and a small museum stand in the trees. Łebsko and Gardno, the bays the dunes sealed off, sit on the Baltic flyway, and on autumn passage up to 7,000 cranes gather near Krakulice with thousands of geese and whooper swans resting on the lakes, watched from towers on the shore, while the river mouths that never freeze hold waterbirds through the winter. The park is a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
