The forest is a maze of islands and creeks that the tide drowns and uncovers twice a day, the mud is pierced by millions of breathing roots that the mangroves push up through it for air, and there are no roads; the only way in is by boat. From Khulna or Mongla a small launch takes you two or three days into the creeks, sleeping aboard, threading channels that narrow until the branches meet overhead and then opening onto wide brown rivers. The banks are where you look. Chital deer drift down to the water in herds to drink and browse on fallen leaves, kingfishers sit on every bare stick, crocodiles lie on the mud, and monkeys, monitor lizards and wild boar come and go. The tiger is almost never seen, and the forest is shaped by it anyway.\n\nAt forest-edge stations such as Karamjal, raised boardwalks let you walk in among the mangroves on foot, over the root-spiked mud, which is the closest most people get to standing in the forest. Around its edges live communities that depend on it: fishing families, crab-catchers, and the Mawali, licensed honey-gatherers who for a few weeks each spring go deep among the trees to cut wild honeycomb from the branches, in the tiger's own ground, which makes theirs the most dangerous honey harvest in the world. Before they enter, they pray to Bonbibi, the lady of the forest, a guardian spirit honoured by Hindus and Muslims alike. From November to February the air is cool and dry, the channels are calm, and migrating waterbirds fill the mudflats; it is the best time to be on the water.
