The canopy walkway is the reason most people come: narrow suspension bridges strung between the tallest trees, swaying under your feet some forty metres above the forest floor, level with the birds, the hornbills and the flowering crowns, in a layer of the forest that is otherwise never seen. From there the trail and boardwalks climb Bukit Teresek, a hill loud with cicadas, to a clearing that opens over the treetops toward Gunung Tahan, the highest mountain in the peninsula.\n\nThe forest is a different world after dark. On a guided night walk the torch picks out tarantulas, stick insects, sleeping birds and the eyes of civets, and with the lights off the rotting wood glows with fungi. Hides on the salt licks are slept in for the chance of tapir, sambar deer or, in theory, an elephant; tigers and rhinos are in the park and almost never seen. The forest is the homeland of the Batek, a Negrito people who for generations lived as semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers, moving through the jungle with the seasons, and some still live in it, with blowpipes and a knowledge of the trees that the guides borrow. What has kept the forest whole is less the law than the difficulty of reaching any part of it.
