At its height, around 700, Tikal was one of the greatest cities of the Maya world, and it sits nowhere near a river or lake; for four dry months each year the whole city lived on rainwater it had stored in reservoirs, and when the rains failed for long enough the city was abandoned to the forest, which has held it ever since. The forest around the city is a national park, and the animals are as much the visit as the stone: spider monkeys in the trees, coatis on the paths, ocellated turkeys strutting across the plazas in colours that look painted, and more than 400 bird species, with sixty more arriving from the north each winter. Much of Tikal is still under the forest, mounds that have never been dug.
