The pass is open only from about July to October; when the snow seals it, a hotel made entirely of ice rises on the frozen shore of Bâlea Lake, its walls, beds and bar carved fresh each winter and reached by cable car. In late September and October the beech forest on the slopes turns while the hairpins still run through it. The road was made famous abroad by a television show that called it the best in the world.
