There is no railing. The slab is a few metres wide, and you go out along it until the stone stops under your feet and there is air on three sides; below lies Ringedalsvatnet, long and narrow and blue between bare ridges. This is the picture that made the place famous, and it cannot be bought with a ticket. No road, cable car or lift reaches the tongue. The only way is on foot from Skjeggedal, about 28 kilometres there and back, climbing steadily over open plateau with no shelter, a ten-to-twelve-hour day for most people. For most of that day you are on high, bare ground: rock, meltwater streams, boulder fields and patches of snow that last into July, with the lake appearing far below only in the last hours.\n\nThe crossing is the point as much as the rock. What you are walking on was shaped by frost, and the frost has not finished: every winter water seeps into the cracks, freezes and pushes, which is how the tongue was cut from the cliff and how it is still being cut. At the tip there is usually a queue in summer, because fewer than 800 people a year came here before photographs spread online around 2010, and more than 80,000 come now; you wait, walk out, get your minutes on the edge and walk back. The day is harder than most people expect. In the summer of 2016 rescue teams were called out 42 times, almost always for hikers caught by darkness or exhaustion rather than by the drop. There is a way around all of it.
