The valley is treeless and about 25 kilometres long, flat-bottomed between snow-streaked peaks, with the young Terek braiding down the middle in shallow channels, and the walk runs along the floor beside it with green meadows on either side and the peaks closing the view ahead. The colour comes up from below. Mineral springs seep through the ground, and as their water meets the air the iron in it rusts and settles, laying down sheet after sheet of orange and ochre rock; travertine like this is usually the work of hot springs, but Truso's is built by water that runs cold, and Georgia protects it as a natural monument. Beside the sheets sits Abano lake, churning and bubbling as though it were boiling, though it is cold to the touch: the fizz is carbon dioxide rising through the water.\n\nThe valley was a homeland. Ossetian families lived here for centuries, and above the river stand their marks, medieval defence towers and the ruined fortress of Zakagori on its ridge, a short steep climb from the floor; a census in 1939 counted more than three thousand Ossetians across the villages, and almost no one lives here now. You pass through Ketrisi and the other half-empty hamlets, where roofless stone houses stand among the few still lived in and a handful of shepherds spend the summer.
