Shkhara rises to 5,193 metres in a wall of glacier and rock, and a walk of a full day out and back follows the river up through flowering summer meadows to the foot of its glacier, with the tower silhouettes dropping away behind. Above the hamlet of Zhibiani stands the Lamaria church, small and dark with frescoes inside, and from its hill at dawn the whole line of towers lines up against the glaciers; long before Christianity reached these valleys the Svans worshipped Lamaria as goddess of the hearth, the herds and the harvest, and when the church came they kept her name.
