Meanders are what lazy rivers make on flat ground, and these are lowland loops buried in a gorge: the Uvac wound across a plain that was later lifted, and it cut down through the rising limestone while keeping its bends, with the water dammed into a reservoir at the bottom. The climb to the Molitva viewpoint is forty-five minutes of steep, unshaded path, ending on a small platform with nothing between the visitor and the drop, and the full bend lies below like a map, the picture that stands for the canyon; on cold autumn mornings the air pools over the water and fills the bends with mist, so the rim stands above a canyon packed to the brim with cloud.\n\nThe griffons are the canyon's other tenants, brought back from a handful of pairs in the 1990s to several hundred birds. In the cold early hours they sit hunched and motionless on the ledges, and when the thermals build they drop off the cliff and circle up out of the gorge, highest in the warm months, and the young make their first flights from June to August; birds ringed here have been found as far away as Yemen.
