The rapid is a stack of Devonian dolomite laid down in flat sheets, and it is slowly eating itself from underneath, the soft layers washing out and the ledge breaking off in slabs, so that the line of the fall has crept upstream over the centuries; in spring the meltwater widens it to some 270 metres of rock, the one time the full ledge runs, and by late summer the river drops and the ledge surfaces as flat dolomite shelves with water sliding over them shin-deep, walked out onto barefoot. The near bank runs right up to the edge, and a spot a single step from where the river crosses the lip is taken before the town wakes, with the old town on the far side and the mist on the water.\n\nFrom early April the vimba, a silver fish of the bream family, mass below the step and start to jump, bodies breaking out of the brown spring water, hanging for a moment and mostly falling back, a run that holds until about 10 May, and salmon and sea trout try the same ledge in autumn.
