Stone Town is the capital, a maze of coral-stone alleys too narrow for cars, and the thing to do is give it a slow afternoon and let it pull you off any planned route, past heavy wooden doors studded with brass, the old sultans' palaces, the cathedral built on the site of the slave market, and the seafront food stalls at dusk. The sultans were Omani, and it was one of them who had clove trees carried across the ocean from Indonesia and planted in the 1810s; the spice farms in the island's centre still grow them, and a guide walks you through a plantation snapping twigs, roots and pods to smell, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla side by side. Stone Town was also the setting for the shortest war in history, a naval bombardment in 1896 that was over in well under an hour.\n\nThe coast is the other Zanzibar. On the east side the tide goes out for a kilometre, leaving a shining plain of wet sand you can walk across to the reef, with women bent over seaweed farms in the shallows, a crop that arrived in the late 1980s and gave many their first income. Boatmen take you out to the reefs where the water shifts from pale green to deep blue over the coral, and at Nungwi, on the northern tip, the big dhows are still built by hand on the open sand. At sunset a wooden dhow sails you out over the shallows under a single sail as the afternoon wind picks up. Inland, the boardwalk into Jozani Forest finds the Zanzibar red colobus, a russet monkey with a tuft of white hair that lives nowhere else on Earth.
