The walls are petrified sand, the compacted dunes of one of the largest deserts the Earth has ever known, laid down around 200 million years ago and now standing in cliffs of red, pink and white above a green canyon floor of cottonwoods. Angels Landing is the fin. The built trail ends at a saddle, and the last half-mile follows a spine of sandstone where you pull yourself along bolted chains with the canyon dropping away 300 metres on both sides, to a summit that a visiting minister in 1916 said only an angel could land on. The Narrows is the river. Upstream from the end of the road the only trail is the Virgin itself, and you wade it, sometimes waist-deep, as the canyon squeezes to a corridor of wet rock barely wider than the water and hundreds of metres high.\n\nThe canyon floor is gentler. A shuttle runs its length, the paved Pa'rus Trail follows the river along the flat bottom, and at the Canyon Junction bridge, twenty minutes before sunset, the light comes up the walls and the Watchman peak turns red above the water. The Zion–Mount Carmel Highway, built in 1930, switchbacks up the east wall and bores straight through the rock in a 1.7-kilometre tunnel whose windows open onto sudden frames of cliff, coming out among slickrock domes on the plateau. California condors, down to 22 birds in the world in 1982, now nest in these cliffs, and a chick hatched here in 2019 was the first in Zion in modern times.
