Bryce Canyon holds more hoodoos — slender spires of orange rock — than anywhere else on Earth. Despite the name it is not a canyon but a row of natural amphitheatres bitten into the eastern edge of a Utah plateau, so you look down into it rather than along it. The towers stand in ranks, thousands of them, banded from cream through orange to deep rust, some thin enough to see daylight through. Frost made them: for roughly two hundred days a year the temperature crosses freezing here, and water trapped in the soft Claron limestone expands as it freezes and prises the rock apart. Bryce Amphitheatre, the largest bowl, runs about 19 kilometres along the plateau and drops 240 metres to its floor. The rim stands above 2,400 metres, so the air is thin and cold, and snow sits on the red spires for months.
The light is what people come for. At sunrise the first rays hit the tips of the towers while the basins below still hold cold blue shadow, and the orange climbs down tower by tower. Thor's Hammer, a block of hard rock balanced on a worn stalk, is the one everybody photographs. Most people watch from Sunrise and Sunset Points on the rim, then drop down the Navajo Loop switchbacks into the amphitheatre itself. Down there, Douglas-firs stretching for light look small beside the walls, and the towers you looked down on now stand over you. The climb back out is the part that catches people, because the air at this altitude is thinner than it feels. The park has protected this since 1928, and its remoteness has bought it a second reputation. Certified a Gold-tier Dark Sky Park in 2019, Bryce shows up to 7,500 stars on a moonless night, with the Milky Way standing over the hoodoos.
