Lightning is not evenly distributed. Satellite data from NASA's lightning imaging sensors has mapped every strike on Earth for three decades. The result is a map with a few extremely bright spots on it. In those places the geography traps warm wet air against cold air night after night, and the sky discharges hundreds of times an hour, most of the year.
The best of them is Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela, where the Catatumbo river meets the lake. Warm air off the water hits cold air spilling down from the Andes, and the collision produces storms on roughly 260 nights a year, sometimes for nine hours at a stretch with 28 flashes a minute. Sailors used it as a lighthouse. Most of the strikes are cloud-to-cloud, which is why you can watch it from a distance in relative safety.
What makes this worth travelling for rather than watching from a window at home is the near-certainty. You are not waiting for a storm — you are booking a place where the storm is a nightly institution. The rules that come with it are simple and non-negotiable: watch from indoors, from a boat cabin, or from a vehicle, never from open water or a ridge, and treat every "safe distance" claim with suspicion. Lightning kills a few thousand people a year, and it concentrates in exactly these places.

Venezuela
The highest lightning density on Earth — about 250 flashes per square kilometre per year, on roughly 260 nights, concentrated over one corner of one lake. Warm Caribbean air is funnelled into the Maracaibo basin and hits cold Andean downdraughts from three mountain ranges at once, and the storm regenerates over the same spot night after night. You watch it from stilt villages built out over the water, so the entire sky is unobstructed and the strikes reflect off the lake beneath them.
The topography does it: three cordilleras funnelling into a warm inland sea. Nothing else on Earth is arranged this way.
When · Strongest September to November, weakest in the January–March dry season. Storms build after dark and peak around midnight.
2Lake Victoria basin — Ssese Islands & Kampala shore
Uganda
Up to a thousand people drown on this lake every year, most of them fishermen caught out by the night storms — enough of a toll that an international project built the lake its own warning system.
Satellite analysis puts the Lake Victoria basin second only to Lake Maracaibo worldwide, and the 2016 NASA-led survey ranked several of its shorelines above Catatumbo on flash density for parts of the year. Storms roll in off the lake at night with a wall of light behind them.

3Kifuka & the Congo basin
DR Congo
The satellites read 158 strikes per square kilometre a year here, the second-densest reading on the planet — in a village that is simply the nearest one to the measurement.
Nobody goes to watch this. Eastern Congo is an active conflict zone with no visitor infrastructure, and the basin holds its record whether or not anyone stands under it.
When · Storms are near-continuous through the year, peaking in the wet seasons.
4Hector the Convector — Tiwi Islands & Darwin
Australia
Research aircraft are flown into it: a high-altitude M55 Geophysica sampled ice from Hector at 19 kilometres, above the tropopause, where the storm wets the stratosphere.
A thunderstorm so reliable it has a name and a first name. Sea breezes from both sides of the Tiwi Islands collide over the middle every afternoon in the build-up season, producing a 20 km-high cumulonimbus at almost the same time each day — pilots used it as a navigation mark in the Second World War.
When · September to March, the "build-up" and wet season. Hector forms in the afternoon and is visible from Darwin across the water.
5Bogor
Indonesia
Known in Indonesia as Kota Hujan, the rain city — Bogor records over 300 thunderstorm days a year, more than almost anywhere, driven by moist air rising against the Salak and Gede volcanoes.
When · Year-round, heaviest October to April. Storms are an afternoon institution rather than a night one.
6Singapore & the Strait of Malacca
Singapore
Lightning-network data from 2005 to 2016 show strokes running nearly twice as dense over the shipping lane through the strait as over the water beside it: ship exhaust is seeding the storms.
One of the highest lightning rates of any city on Earth, with the Sumatra squalls crossing the strait before dawn and the whole skyline lit from behind.
When · April–May and October–November are the peak inter-monsoon months; squalls arrive between 4 and 8 a.m.
7Córdoba & the Sierras de Córdoba
Argentina
A supercell over Villa Carlos Paz on 8 February 2018 dropped a hailstone estimated at 18.8 to 23.7 centimetres across — at or beyond the world record, and the case that gave meteorology the term gargantuan hail.
South America's storm laboratory. The RELAMPAGO field campaign came here because the Sierras generate some of the tallest thunderstorms measured anywhere, and the continent also holds the record for the longest-lasting single flash, at 17.1 seconds.

8The Great Plains — Nebraska to west Texas
United States
Storm radar was invented in the middle of it: in 1964 engineers at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma built the first pulsed Doppler radar for watching weather.
The clearest storm structure in the world. Dry air off the Rockies caps humid Gulf air until it explodes upward, producing isolated supercells you can see whole from 50 km away — a rotating tower lit from inside.
