The Sai Kung Hexagonal Rock Columns are cliffs of pale rhyolite rising a hundred metres out of the South China Sea at the eastern edge of Hong Kong, in the Sai Kung peninsula of the New Territories, columns of six sides cooled inside the caldera of a supervolcano 140 million years ago, and they are walked along on the dam of a reservoir and seen from below by boat, in a geopark at the end of the minibus line. The columns are shrinkage cracks, the pattern that thick volcanic ash takes as it cools and contracts, and they are unusual in being rhyolite rather than basalt and in their size, up to two metres across, standing in ranks along the coast and the islands; the High Island Geo Trail along the East Dam is the only part reached without a boat, a flat path with the columns in the cliff beside it, one face carrying columns curved into an S, pushed out of line while the rock still had give and set in that shape, and at the waterline the columns step down like a staircase cut in a hurry, with every wave threading the gaps between them. The reservoir behind the dam was not dug but walled off from the sea in the 1970s, a bay closed at both ends and pumped fresh.
Some 7,000 interlocking concrete blocks, dolosse, are heaped against the ocean face of the dam to take the typhoon swell. Chartered boats and kayaks from Sai Kung town round the headland for the view no footpath gives, the sea cliffs of Po Pin Chau, an island of columns split from the shore, and the sea caves of the coast, and the trail is empty after the last minibus leaves, when the galactic core climbs over the sea beyond the dam on the clear nights that follow a passing storm. The Sai Kung columns are a volcano's floor stood in the sea, and the dam is the walkway along it.
