Skuleskogen National Park stands on ground that is still climbing out of the sea, and no land on Earth is known to climb faster. Released from the ice sheet that pressed it down, the coast has sprung back about 285 metres and still rises roughly a centimetre a year. That rise has left its marks all over the park. Its oldest shoreline, cut by waves when the ice had only just gone, runs across the hills at about 282 metres: above that line forest grows on moraine the sea never touched; below it the rock lies scrubbed bare. Fields of stones sit in ridges where storm waves once sorted them, and Bronze Age burial cairns, raised at the water's edge, now stand 30 to 50 metres above the sea in deep forest. Splitting the middle of the park is Slåttdalsskrevan, a slot 200 metres long, seven metres wide and 30 metres deep, opened where a band of diabase, injected into the red granite 1.2 billion years ago, weathered away faster than the rock around it.
Walking here, you feel the geology underfoot. Paths cross rounded stones that shift and clack, climb bare granite domes held by wind-bent pines more than 500 years old, and drop into humid spruce where beard lichen hangs in pale strands from the branches. Much of this forest was logged in the late 1800s; the poor rock ledges, never worth cutting, keep the true ancients. In the crevasse's permanent cold shade, mountain plants survive close to sea level. One thing has changed: since June 2023 you can no longer walk the floor of Slåttdalsskrevan, closed after rockfall. The clearest proof of the rising land waits at the shore, where the Tärnättholmarna rocks were once true islands and are now joined to the mainland by bars of sand you can walk across.
