The Moeraki Boulders are stone spheres lying loose on a beach, the biggest a little over two metres across and too heavy to shift. About fifty of them are scattered along the sand between Moeraki and Hampden, some split open to show the yellow and brown calcite filling the cracks inside. Behind them the black mudstone cliff is still delivering more: half-exposed boulders bulge from the bank, waiting for it to give way. Each sphere began as a shell fragment or pebble on a seafloor 60 million years ago, and calcite crystallising out of the mud gathered around that speck, layer on layer, for four to five million years. Geologists call them septarian concretions — mudstone balls cemented harder than the rock around them and cracked inside into a net of mineral veins.
The tide runs the visit. At low water the spheres stand clear and you can walk out among them; as the sea returns it swirls around each one and swallows it to the shoulder. Dawn is the moment to be there — the beach faces east, so the sun lifts straight out of the Pacific and the wet stone turns copper. No lights reach this sand, and from autumn the Milky Way's core rises out of the same horizon. Many of the boulders that fell out of the cliff before these ones were carted off as souvenirs. What is left now sits in a scientific reserve inside the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark, New Zealand's first UNESCO Global Geopark, endorsed in 2023. To Kāi Tahu the spheres are Te Kaihīnaki, food baskets and gourds washed ashore from a wrecked canoe.
