Kadıköy Street Life (Bull, Bahariye & Süreyya Opera)

Istanbul City Guide
Street · KadıköyIstanbul, Turkey

Kadıköy's meeting point is a bronze bull. It stands at Altıyol, the six-way junction where everyone in the district arranges to meet, and it took a long route to get there: cast in France in the 1860s, carried off by Germany after the Franco-Prussian War, passed on to the Ottoman court, and set up first in the grounds of Beylerbeyi Palace and later at a slaughterhouse gate. Kadıköy got it for good in 1969. From the bull, Bahariye Avenue runs downhill as a pedestrian street lined with bookshops, record stores and the theatres that once made this the Asian side's stage. Halfway along stands the Süreyya Opera, an Art Deco house a retired pasha built in 1927 so his side of the water would have one too. The rest of the quarter is for walking. You drift from the fish market's iced counters into lanes where cats outnumber cars, past murals, buskers with saz and cello, and cafés that spill across the pavement. Kadife Sokak, known as Bar Street, fills after dark, and the Süreyya's chandeliers light up for a ballet a few doors from a döner stand. Nothing here is grand on its own. What makes it worth the ferry is how much is packed into a few streets, and who is packed in with you: students, artists and grandmothers waiting at the same crossing. Kadıköy is where Istanbul feels most like itself, well off the tourist trail.

Worth knowing

Good to know

  • Everyone says "at the bull" but nobody lingers there — the statue is just the compass point; the district you actually came for begins in the lanes behind it.
  • Kadıköy runs two shifts — mornings belong to the fish market and old-timers with tea; after dark, Kadife Sokak (Bar Street) takes over. Come twice to catch both.
  • Look at the bull's horns, not just the bull — decades of hands rubbing them for luck have polished the bronze to a bright gold, a detail most photos miss.
  • The best food here never gets a table — in the fish-market lanes the real cooking happens at standing counters; the sit-down spots near the bull mostly charge you for the chairs.

Things to do

  1. 1

Start at the bull and drift downhill

Start at the bull and drift downhill

Meet where everyone does, at the bronze bull on Altıyol, then follow Bahariye Avenue downhill on foot. Let the side lanes pull you off course — that is the point. Stop when a record shop, a bookseller or a busker with a saz makes you stop, and don't rush back.

  2. 2

Eat your way through the fish-market lanes

Eat your way through the fish-market lanes

Turn into the narrow streets of the Balık Pazarı in late morning, when the counters glisten with ice. Graze rather than sit: a tumbler of tangy pickle juice, stuffed mussels squeezed with lemon, a warm slab of börek. Follow the longest local queue — it is almost always the safest bet.

  3. 3

Come back after dark for Bar Street

Come back after dark for Bar Street

Return to Kadife Sokak — Bar Street — once the shops shut and the lanes switch character. Squeeze onto a stool, order something local, and let the crowd of students, musicians and regulars carry the night. Stand still for a minute and you can watch the street change hands, from shoppers to drinkers, within an hour.

  4. 4

    Look up at the Süreyya

    Look up at the Süreyya

Pause on the pavement outside the Süreyya Opera and lift your eyes to the 1920s facade — the reliefs, the lyres, the stone garlands most people walk straight past. If a ballet or recital is on, step inside for the chandelier-lit hall, a few doors from the döner stands.
