A steep quarter on the Golden Horn's Galata side, once a Genoese port, where ferry quays, old banks, chandlers and design studios share one slope.

Karaköy is the steep waterfront quarter on the Galata side of the Golden Horn, and you meet two versions of it at once. Down at the water, ferries thud against the quay, gulls trail the boats crossing to Kadıköy, and the Galataport promenade lines the Bosphorus with glass and moored cruise ships. Turn uphill and the lanes narrow into design studios, roasteries and small galleries settled inside old commercial buildings. The smell shifts from diesel and fish to roasting coffee. Ship chandlers and hardware sellers still hold Perşembe Pazarı behind the quay. The quarter grew out of Genoese Galata, the walled Latin colony that traded across the medieval Mediterranean, and it stayed polyglot for centuries: Greek, Armenian, Jewish and Levantine merchants worked the wharves below the tower. Later the late Ottoman banks lined the hill above them. Karaköy Güllüoğlu has sold the city's best-known baklava down by the ferry pier since 1949, a short walk from Kılıç Ali Paşa Camii, the mosque Sinan built in Tophane in 1580.

Worth knowing

Good to know

  • The stairs beat the road — locals take the Camondo Steps to climb from the bank district toward Galata; you skip the traffic-choked road and get the neighbourhood's best short walk in the bargain.
  • Weekdays are the real Karaköy — the hardware lanes of Perşembe Pazarı run on the working week; when the trades rest the shutters roll down and the old quarter loses half its noise.
  • Dusk is when the two Karaköys meet — the hardware trade winds down as the coffee-and-design streets fill up, so the quarter's working self and its evening self barely overlap.
  • Fish and meze under the bridge — the eating houses packed beneath Galata Bridge deal in plain grilled fish and cold meze, and the plainness is the whole point of them.

Things to do

  1. 1

    Climb the Camondo Stairs

    Climb the Camondo Stairs

Start at the foot of the Camondo Stairs on Bankalar Caddesi, the Street of Banks, and climb slowly, watching the balustrade fold from one curve into the next. Pause halfway and look back down the slope; the steps were shaped to guide the eye as much as the feet. Come early, before the photo queues form.

  2. 2

    Get lost in Perşembe Pazarı

    Get lost in Perşembe Pazarı

Wander into Perşembe Pazarı, the tangle of lanes behind the waterfront where ironmongers stack tools, rope, ship fittings and brass. Look up between the shopfronts for the arched stone facades of Genoese and early-Ottoman buildings, half-hidden above the clutter.

  3. 3

    Stand where the ferries load

    Stand where the ferries load

Down at the quay, buy a fish sandwich near the bridge and stand where the ferries load and empty. Watch the gulls wheel behind each departing boat and the fishermen line the rail overhead. For a calmer stretch, walk on along the Galataport promenade and let the Bosphorus open out beside you.

  4. 4

Read the old trade behind the counter

Read the old trade behind the counter

In the uphill lanes toward Galata, pick one of the roasteries or design studios and look past the counter at the room itself. Iron hooks left in the ceiling, patterned tile floors and heavy steel shutters give away the hardware or textile business that worked there first.
