Lake Salda is a turquoise lake in Burdur province, in southwestern Türkiye, ringed by beaches of white mineral that microbes are still building, the closest match on Earth to the floor of the Jezero crater on Mars, and it is swum at marked public beaches in July and August, looked at across a fence where the white islands stand, and seen whole from the black pines on the slopes above. The lake is deep, 185 metres, and fed by no river, only rain, snowmelt and springs, so its level falls in drought and with the pumping of the basin's groundwater, and its white shore is not sand but hydromagnesite, a carbonate laid down by mats of microbes in the shallows and broken into pale grains that crunch rather than slip underfoot; NASA sent scientists here before the Perseverance rover landed in 2021, because the carbonate minerals ringing the old shoreline of Jezero are the same, and Salda is the place on Earth to learn how they formed and whether they hold life. At the public beaches the water is so clear that the white floor seems to hold the light, and the turquoise runs out over the shelf to a deep bottle-green centre.
The mounds that give the lake its colour, the White Islands, are off limits behind a wooden barrier since the crowds of a few summers ago began breaking them, and they are looked at rather than walked on, standing clear of the water as the lake draws down through the dry months and the shallow turquoise band widens. From the pine slopes that come down to the lake the whole shape of Salda opens, a white rim, a turquoise band where the shelf lies shallow and the green centre, and the drive around the shore passes the villages of Yeşilova and the picnic beaches. For the rest of the year Salda is a lake to look at rather than get into, cold and windswept at 1,140 metres. Lake Salda is a piece of Mars in Anatolia, and the microbes are still at work on the beach.
